Knowing Your Container
When it comes to purchasing a shipping container for your home or business, there are lots of things to know when it comes to shipping container types, grades, and prices.
A container is not JUST a container after all! Just like automobiles, there are different years, and similar to mileage, shipping containers that have traveled many trips are going to have different ratings – which affects the container pricing.

Container Grades
- DV/ASI - As Is
- WWT - Wind & Water Tight
- CW - Cargo Worthy
- IICL - Used Lease Box, Repaired to Marine Criteria (IICL6)
- PS - Portable Storage or One Trip units
- DD - Double Door / Doors on Each End
Container Grades Explained
As-is containers are the lowest quality and will have the lowest pricing. These units are low in supply and are rarely sold.
Wind & Water Tight is the most common container for sale, these are great for storage, and can be refinished and used for building. W&WT containers will range in price depending on the location and time of year you are looking to purchase.
Cargo Worthy shipping containers tend to be priced about 10-50% higher than a WWT unit. So if you get a shipping container quote for $2000 on a WWT container, a CW container might be as much as $3000 plus.
If you need something newer, we recommend a New/1-Trip container. These were built and shipped to the depots specifically for resale, so they have not been used to ship freight. They typically come in beige or gray in color.
These conditions only apply to the container price alone and do not include shipping container freight charges. The shipping container price will not affect the freight charges, as it’s based on the mileage of the trucking company and the trailer type.
